Life Issues Home Bible Study Programme - Relating the Word of God to the Realities of Life.

APPRENTICESHIP

Read Proverbs 1:8-19 (key verse 8).
Our actions speak louder than our words. This is especially true in the home. Children learn values, morals, and priorities by observing how their parents act and react every day. If parents exhibit a deep reverence for and dependence on God, the children will catch these attitudes. Teach them right living by giving worship an important place in your family life and by reading the Bible together.

Read Proverbs 6:20-35 (key verses 20,21).
Experiences allow us to counsel our children and grandchildren from what God has taught us. This process is important in the family. It is natural and good for children, as they grow toward adulthood, to become increasingly independent of their parents. Young adults, however, should take care not to turn a deaf ear to their parents—to reject their advice just when it is needed most.

Read Matthew 20:20-28 (key verses 20,21).
The mother of James and John asked Jesus to give her sons special positions in his kingdom. Parents naturally want to see their children promoted and honoured, but this desire is dangerous if it causes them to lose sight of God’s specific will for their children. God may have different work in mind—not as glamorous, but just as important. Thus parents’ desires for their children’s advancement must be held in check as they pray for God’s will to be done in their children’s lives.

Read 1 Timothy 3:1-16 (key verse 5).
We sometimes make the mistake of thinking our work is so important that we are justified in ignoring our families. Spiritual leadership, however, must begin at home. If a man is not willing to care for, discipline, and teach his children, he is not qualified to lead the church. Don’t allow your volunteer activities to detract from your family responsibilities.

Read Hebrews 12:1-13 (key verses 12,13).
We are responsible for the example we set. Others will follow our example, and we have a responsibility to them if we claim to live for Christ. Does your example make it easier for others to believe, follow, and mature in Christ? Or would those who follow you end up confused and misled?
