Many Christians who have studied and practiced the martial arts have been asked, "How can a Christian be a martial artist?"  Many martial arts have religious ties to Buddhism and Taoism. They encourage practices that promote mysticism and the occult. The Bible gives strong warnings against participating in such practices.

The association of Eastern religion and mysticism with the martial arts is in fact a strong reason why Christians should become involved in these arts. In recent years there has been an explosion of interest in karate, kung fu, and other arts. Many people have studied under teachers without regard to their philosophy and religious beliefs.

The teachers, clubs, and ministries, associated with Koinonia are committed to providing a safe Christian environment in which to train. It is our desire to help others build healthy relationships with God, family, church, and friends.

• As Christians we must pursue the path of peace. We must never allow our anger to rule our actions. When we suffer offense, we must endure it graciously, showing compassion and care to those who stand against us. Romans 12:18, Matthew 5:9

• As Christians we must only use our skills to defend ourselves and others. We must do it with mercy and restraint. We must never use more force than is necessary for protection. We must never seek retribution on those who offend or injure us. Rather, we should pray for them that they may be restored in grace and fellowship. John 15:13, Romans 12:19&20

• As Christians we must avoid mysticism. The traditions, philosophies, techniques, and language whose roots are in Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Shinto, and other religious philosophies must be identified and set aside and be replaced with curriculum that will lead people into truth.
