We know that the Apostle Paul made references to athletic training, and it's likely that pankration (full contact fighting in ancient greece) may have been one of the sports he was referring to (there weren't many other well known sports at that time, that I can think of and pankration was, if understand correctly, a big sport in greece.)
We also have the illustration of Jacob wrestling with an angel, wrestling of course is a big part of MMA as a whole.
We also know that God has angels of war / angels of wrath, that he uses in the Old Testament and again in the book of Revelation (in the last days of Earth before the Millenial Kingdom of Christ) to bring devastating judgments to those doomed to destruction.
Do these justify the sport of MMA?
For many hundreds of years, God raised up warriors in the Old Testament, and equipped them with his Spirit, and they went forward into battle and were told by God to sometimes absolutely devastate opposing armys and the people of nations God sent the Israelites forward to conquer.
As a Christian, who reads and studies and strives each day to live by the Word, when I think of MMA and how God might view it, I also have to think how God would view sports like football and hockey. I feel a strong conviction that these sports are ok, as long as the athlete's heart is in the right place, and he or she is competing from a spiritually healthy perspective.
Christians who train and fight in MMA, should (like other believers) live by the Word of God. Love God with all their heart (the Greatest commandment), love their enemies, turn the other cheek, take the last seats at the banquet, show humility before others, show compassion to the downtrodden, etc.
Also, everything these Christian MMA fighters do should be for God's glory -- and win or lose, they should always be thankful to God for their talents / abilities.
Christians who fight for personal glory should seriously question their faith. Christians who fight because they want to be superior to other people should question their faith. Satan fell from heaven because of pride. At all costs, an athlete of any sport should be humble and thankful about their victories.
When out in the community, I think Christian MMA fighters should be more driven to spend time with the downtrodden, and have compassion on other people. The Bible says, to he who much is given, much more will be demanded...
