          TREND SEEN TOWARD SIMPLE LIVING

(RNS) "Voluntary simplicity" is a grassroots movement
destined to have deep social, political, and economic
effects well into the 21st century, according to Gerald
Celente, director of the Trends Research Institute in
Rhinebeck, N.Y. "We track 300 different trends daily, and
none in the 16 years that we've been at this has generated
as much interest as voluntary simplicity," said Celente.

According to "Yearning for Balance," a 1995 study by the
Merck Family Foundation, Americans are vexed by the tide of
rampant materialism that followed World War II. The study
asked Americans from all walks of life their opinions on
          material consumption.

"People of all backgrounds ... believe materialism,
greed, and selfishness increasingly dominate American life."

The Merck study showed that 62% of respondents agreed
with the statement, "I would like to simplify my life." And
28% of respondents had in the past five years made changes
in their lives that resulted in lower incomes: They reduced
work hours, went to lower-paying jobs, or quit work to stay
at home. (Religion News Service, www.nj.com/RNS)
