Clergy/Leaders' Mail-list Bulletin No. 1-003 -- Fri 18 May 2001 Items: 1 Series by Ravi Zacharias 2 Rising Nationalism Impacts Japanese Christians 3 No Christian Principles without Christ -------------------------------------------------------------------- SERIES BY RAVI ZACHARIAS We are grateful - and we are sure you will be too - that we have special permission from Ravi Zacharias to use 'The Cry for a Reason in Suffering' in CLM. This is Chapter 3 (pp 63-90) from his book 'Cries of the Heart' (Copyright 1999, Word Publishers) and will appear in eight parts over the coming weeks. A skilful apologist, Zacharias based this chapter on the book of Job. Thanks to Rowland Croucher for obtaining this feature for CLM. ------------------------------ RISING NATIONALISM IMPACTS JAPANESE CHRISTIANS Since the enthronement of the new emperor in 1990, nationalism reminiscent of the old style, pre-war militaristic Shintoism is on the rise in Japan. History books have been rewritten and the new Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi, a right wing nationalist, is seeking to change the pacifist nature of Japan's 1946 post-WW2 constitution. He is also intending as the PM to visit the controversial Yasukuni Shrine where Japan's war dead are venerated as deities. In 1999, a bill was passed that officially recognised the 'Kimigayo' (the anthem honouring the Emperor's rule) and the 'Hinomaru' (the flag honouring the sun goddess and emperor of the sun). Local governments and schools are enforcing the veneration of the flag and anthem - those not co-operating are being punished. Japanese Christians seek our prayer support.
