Clergy/Leaders' Mail-list Bulletin No. 1-002 -- Fri 27 Apr 2001 Items: 1 In Recess 2 Six Popular Myths to be Dispelled 3 Violent Easter 2001 for Christians in Khartoum 4 4.1 Billion View 'Jesus' Film in 636 Languages 5 Every Moment -------------------------------------------------------------------- IN RECESS After two or three more CLM messages, your Clergy/Leaders' Mail- list will go into recess for approximately two weeks. I (Ron Clough - CLM moderator) will be away from my usual facilities when I attend the World Evangelical Fellowship (quadrenniel) General Assembly, this time in Kuala Lumpur. Over 500 hundred participants from 100+ nations have registered. As a commissioner of the WEF Religious Liberty Commission, I will also be involved in a meeting of the Commission prior to the Assembly. (The next few CLM messages sent will include two of the Psalms on Sundays series, so that they will remain up to date during the 'recess'.) ------------------------------ SIX POPULAR MYTHS TO BE DISPELLED The Rod Benson sermons we send from time to time are well received. (Rod is pastor of Blakehurst Baptist Church, Sydney, Australia.) So we think you'll like a series we will start soon which Rod preached to counter six popular myths: * It doesn't matter what you believe, as long as you're sincere. * God is unreasonable / unreliable / unconcerned / unpleasable. * If I ignore my pain / problems, they will go away. * I can make changes in my life quickly and painlessly. * Other people cause my stress. * I can control things by worrying about them. Rod's series is heavily adapted (with permission) from a series preached by Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Valley Community Church, California www.saddleback.com. ------------------------------ VIOLENT EASTER 2001 FOR CHRISTIANS IN KHARTOUM During Easter 2000, the German evangelist Reinhard Bonnke visited Khartoum, Sudan. Unprecedented numbers turned out to hear the gospel in the central Green Square, with some 210,000 on the final night. This year Bonnke returned to Sudan at the invitation of the Sudan Council of Churches (SCC), with official permission for another Easter Campaign in Green Square. However on 10 April, the Government, citing 'security concerns', suddenly withdrew permission and violently attempted to move the people to an outer suburban church. Several believers were beaten and shot. On the advice of the SCC, Bonnke left Sudan at once. As believers met for prayer in All Saints Cathedral, police broke up the gathering with tear gas, arresting 105 and summarily sentencing 53 to be immediately flogged and imprisoned. Evidence is suggesting the involvement of both local and international Islamic militant bodies in the cancellation of the Reinhard Bonnke Easter event. They branded him as a 'witchcraft atheist and blasphemous Christian'. The Government of Sudan (GoS) has accused Christian critics in the West of being 'religious right wingers' intent on fomenting discontent in Sudan. A spokesman for the GoS wishes to inform us that 'Sudan respects the right of all people to practise their religion' and that Article 24 of Sudan's 1998 Constitution provides for freedom of religion and creed and religious co-existence. It is hard to see the GoS on that basis conducting the 'impartial and independent investigation' that Amnesty International is calling for. Please pray for the Christians in Sudan.
