1. NEW SERIES: LWNT - LIVING WORDS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT

We know that subscribers will really value this new fortnightly
series that will start in CLM this week. It has been written by Rev
Dr Leon Morris, who is an internationally recognised New Testament
scholar, theologian and author. He is from Melbourne Australia,
where he was formerly Principal of Ridley (Anglican) College. Dr
Morris has written 50 books and contributed to numerous
commentaries.

Lest that sounds all very academic, you should know too that he
served for some years as a missioner in the Bush Church Aid
Society, which no doubt helped to ensure that his work is so
readable and accessible to non-theologians and 'experts' alike.

This feature series appeared in 'Daily Notes', published by
Scripture Union. ('Daily Notes' is now named 'Encounter with God'.)

2. PSALMS ON SUNDAYS BIBLE READING NOTES by Rev David Bruce

David Bruce, author of the current CLM series, is a Presbyterian
minister who serves as General Director of Scripture Union in
Northern Ireland and as SU Regional Secretary for Britain and
Ireland. This series is printed in 'Encounter with God'.

3. JIHAD UNRESTRAINED AND SPREADING IN MALUKU, INDONESIA

Jihad in the Molluca Islands, eastern Indonesia, intensified when
thousands of trained Islamic fighters arrived early in May. Whilst
President Wahid closed down their training camp and disarmed them
in April, it seems the authorities could not stop them going to
Maluku and collecting smuggled arms there. The subsequent violence
resulted in 90 dead and 200 wounded by 29 May. This turmoil is
spreading also to other regions. The capital of Sumatra, Medan,
with Indonesia's largest Christian population, has just fallen prey
to Islamic militants. A bomb exploded in a church service on 28
May, injuring 23 Christians, and bombs were found also in two
nearby churches.

Pray for Christians sorely oppressed amidst all this strife, and
that God will give President Wahid the wisdom, will, strength and
support to do what is right and necessary.

4. WITCH DOCTORS REPENT AND TURN TO JESUS IN UGANDA

Four hundred witch doctors participated in an extraordinary service
at Christ the King Kampala, Uganda, because of the work of Roman
Catholic missionary priest Ross Russo, the All Africa News Agency
said in May.

"Excitement mixed with surprise and disbelief" characterised the
packed service as 15 of the witch doctors "gave testimonies of how
they have been hoodwinking people," AANA said. The service, part of
a three-day gathering, attracted the media, Christians, animists,
and newspaper cartoonists, who depicted witch doctors from across
Africa scampering to the church because "even Jesus entered the
homes of sinners and tax collectors," AANA said.

'It was a day of repentance and the congregation was treated to a
session of confessions and revelations of past indulgences in human
divine power," AANA said.

The witch doctors told how they tricked ignorant and unsuspecting
clients by changing their voices to assume the presence of a spirit
or ghost, AANA said. Eliya Kayiira, a witch doctor for 20 years and
now a minister, described how drumming, singing, and the odour of a
special herb during rituals weakens people and makes them think
they are possessed.

Several witch doctors said they were lured into the trade by
threats from another witch doctor that they would not otherwise
recover from illness.

5. GOD, OUR LAST RESORT

How often we look upon God as our last and feeblest resource! We
go to him because we have nowhere else to go. And then we learn
that the storms of life have driven us, not upon the rocks, but
into the desired haven. ... George Macdonald (1824-1905)
