--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. General

The title, Clergy/Leaders' Mail-list, defines the target audience
and content, and should not deter anybody at all from subscribing
to the list who believes they would find it helpful.

Our intention is to send a variety of five or six postings a week,
although circumstances may sometimes prevent that being achieved.

CLM was founded in October 1995 by Rowland Croucher, Director of
John Mark Ministries . Rowland is
a regular contributor and a frequent 'sourcer'. CLM operates
independently but under the general aegis of JMM, and using the
server facilities of PastorNET.

CLM is distributed at no cost to subscribers. The list moderator,
Ron Clough, acts honorarily and absorbs personally the online
costs.

=======================

2. A few technicalities

Messages are sent in standard 7-bit ASCII format, so as to be
acceptable to all servers and computers anywhere. They are composed
or reformatted as far as possible to fit 68 monospaced characters
to a line, to minimise loss of format or breaking up in the
recipient's viewer.

Our preference is always for brevity in postings, but obviously on
a list like this, some topics have to be treated at greater length.
We will never knowingly send a message longer than 20kb, which is a
maximum size allowed by some servers. Where necessary, we will
split the occasional long item into parts.

=======================

3. All those codes and numbers!

----------

CLM-0-123 x  Subject   . . .

. . . appears on the regular CLM postings. The '-0-' is for the
year 2000, so in 2001 it will be '-1-'. (Let's not worry about
2010+: even if CLM is still going then, the medium will undoubtedly
be quite different.)

'123' is the sequence within the year - apart from helping our
systems, it lets you see immediately if you are missing a posting.
(You may or may not be surprised at how many messages are returned
to us at any one time with a 'permanent fatal error' address, only
to be resurrected again within a day or so - in the meantime the
addressee loses the message.) If you send a message to
 with a subject: Re-send CLM-0-123 (or
whatever), we will oblige.

'x' is the category of the message (according to the moderator)

----------

CLB-0-123 Bulletin: Subject  . . .

. . . functions likewise for bulletins to the list, giving
operational or administrative information, news and other snippets
that do not warrant a 'CLM' posting to the list.

----------

CLE 123 is used for 'extra' messages if there are additional,
          specialised or longer postings on a topic that would not
          necessarily interest the whole list.

---------

CLR 123 is used for 'repeat' postings of earlier list messages.

=======================

4. Categories

a - apologetics & social issues; b - Bible studies; d - devotional;
e - evangelism; f - family issues; g - general; i - illustrations;
l - leadership issues; m - missions; p - practical Christian
living; r - reviews; s - sermon/notes; t - theology. (We know 'h -
humour' isn't there: we'll explain why some time.)

5. Submissions

We welcome submissions from list members, particularly original
material. You will appreciate however that it is a moderated list
and, of necessity, the need to be rather selective for reasons
apart from 'quality control'. That's because of the small number of
postings each week, for balance in their scope and content, and the
fact that CLM is pro-active in sourcing material in any case.

If you are submitting copied material, we will need to know the
author and/or source and that use such as on CLM is permitted,
unless it is obviously public domain.

We reserve the right to (sub)edit and reformat material that we
use. We often need to replace generic or working titles with
something more specific or interesting. We do not however attempt
to achieve consistency of spelling, capitalisation or usage across
the whole list, but generally leave the style adopted by the author.

Clearly, CLM is not a discussion type list. Should you wish to take
up a point from a posting (graciously!), we suggest you do so
direct with the author where that is possible, copying to
 if you wish. If some form of followup
seems desirable, we can consider that through CLB or CLE, or CLM if
it will be in the general interests of the list.

If you are sending a message from your e-mail editor/composer, it
will help greatly if it is in plain text and not RTF, HTML or
'quoted-printable'. The same applies if sending, enclosing or
attaching a file from your word processor. (Go to 'Save As' and
select DOS ASCII Text or equivalent in the 'File Type' box.) If
that's all too hard, then we'll probably manage, but text is so
much quicker to use, being the end product, and we are very
cautious about opening attachments without pre-arrangement.

And the appreciative comments we receive from time to time are a
great encouragement.

=======================

6. Copyright

Unless there is a statement to the contrary, you may take it that
permission has been granted for anything sent on CLM to be
reproduced for non-commercial, free distribution, **provided that**
authorship and/or source and copyright notices are included.

As mentioned above, we need the same for submissions to the list.
However, 'author/source unknown' is acceptable where there has been
a credible effort made to check it out.

We are always grateful to receive further information you may have
about authorship or sources of postings made to the list.

We give contact and subscription details for some of the other
lists and ministries whose material we use from time to time. We do
so in appreciation and acknowledgement, and because list members
may well be interested in receiving such material regularly. Those
notices are not paid or gratis advertisements.

=======================

7. Security

The CLM list of addresses is used only by this list, and will not
be made available to anybody else.

We are of course very keen to see the list multiply and appreciate
the efforts of those who introduce CLM to others. Occasionally, a
list member asks us to add somebody else to the list. Because of
anti-spam protocols, we far prefer that people subscribe themselves
direct. Where that may not be possible, we need to know that the
proposed recipient is aware of the subscription request. Failing
all else, we will send a message to the target address, advising
who made the request, and how to unsubscribe if so desired.

=======================

8. What we DON'T need

Please, no messages about ****VIRUS ALERT!!!!!!!!!! Send this to
EVERYBODY you know without even stopping to think about it!!!!!****
or any of those other bleeding heart, hoax or chain letters. Some
sensitive souls, whilst doubtful, feel it can't do any harm to send
them on. Well, it can ... but that's another story.

=======================

We count it a real privilege to serve our Lord and his people
through the ministry of CLM. Your support in prayer is vital.

May the joy of the Lord be your strength. (Nehemiah 8:10)

Grace and peace.

Ron Clough (Moderator, Clergy/Leaders' Mail-list)
