JEALOUSY - A Documentary
COMMENTATOR (passionate, becomes worked up as he commentates) PRODUCTION MANAGER FATHER MOTHER BABY OLDER BROTHER GREENIE FAT MAN US PRESIDENT
COMM. From the beginning of time, mankind has endured...
PROD. MAN. (interrupting) Er, shouldn't that be "person- kind?"
COMM. ...men, women, boys, girls, dogs, dinosaurs, anything else you'd like to throw in to make this documentary politically correct.
PROD. MAN. (interrupting) Er, shouldn't that be "docu-person-tary?"
COMM. SHUT UP! It's not a DocuMENtary, it's a DocuMENTary, alright?
PROD. MAN. OK, OK, I'm sorry. COMM. (clears throat) Anyway...People...Homosapiens...have for a long time endured an intense struggle in an effort to feel loved and appreciated. The answers to the questions "Who am I?", "Am I valuable?", "Do other people like me?" have become shrouded in uncertainty. Bottled emotions, insecurities, mistrust...have robbed many of the ability to face up to who they are in all their uniqueness and speciality, causing them to look at others...who THEY are, what THEY have, what THEY can do, how THEY look. And it all comes back to ONE THING...JEALOUSY. For example...Here is a happy family (family enters, baby sitting on the floor sucking his thumb, while parents dote, and older brother makes a nuisance of himself.) They've recently welcomed a new, innocent child into their home...A product of their sincere love.
(Parents "coochie coo" over baby. They turn to each other, commenting on how cute he is, and while they're not looking, older brother pushes baby over... Baby screams... Father picks older brother up to wallop him, but mother quickly intervenes.)
MOTHER Don't you touch him! He doesn't understand!
FATHER Understand? You don't understand! All you ever think about is the stinking kids! You never care about my needs! (Father storms out then rest of family exits)
COMM. You can see it, can't you? They're caught in a web of destruction...because all anyone wants, is to be noticed; to be in front; to be TOP DOG! (getting more and more worked up) Well, they can't, and someone had better tell them so before it has an irreversible effect on the environment! (wipes sweat from brow) Speaking of the environment, take a look at this greenie, who is supposed to be protecting the trees from mass destruction...Oh, yes, it looks very noble, covering yourself in mud from head to toe, chaining yourself to trees, living in holes in the ground! Can't you see? He's not trying to save the trees. He wants to BE A TREE. Look at the way he dyes his hair green. (Greenie wipes nose and then rubs his hair) He's not happy with the way God made him! NO! It's just like the guy who wants to be a WHALE! (Fat man walks by with Big Mac and "Save The Whale" Sign.) They're all JEALOUS. (Heavy sigh - composes himself) Let's take this a step further. Super powers fighting to be the best, the strongest, the most secure nation on the face of the earth. Why, they don't really want to disarm their nuclear weapons. Then the French would be the only super power left...Some however, can see through this wicked facade of jealousy to stand for what is right.
US PRESIDENT (stomping feet like a spoilt child, and with an American accent) Shoot! Why can't we keep playing with our toys in the Pacific Ocean. Shirack has all the fun! (stomps out in a huff)
COMM. Yes well...let's face it. The world is overcome with this wicked disease...JEALOUSY. And yet...this jealousy thing is an illusion! Why can't we just be thankful for who we are and what we have? Only then can we all live in peace and harmony... Who will join me in the quest to stamp out this major global threat - JEALOUSY?!
PROD. MAN. That was great chief...
COMM. (wiping brow) Thanks, I really put my soul into that one.
PROD. MAN. It's a shame it's on after Mulray.
COMM. What? Not in prime time? That's not fair! Mulray gets all the breaks! I'm important too! I want to be heard! I want MY name in lights! I hate them all! ... (as he is dragged off stage)
