Rev. G.N.L.Guy has a B.A. in Anthroploogy
(sub-major in Media and Sociology)
from Macquarie University, Sydney
in which he wrote his essays from a Christian Perspective, after much prayer and faith.
his premise was:
"Jesus is the answer,
because the problem is sin:
greed, hate, rebellion, selfishness and immorality"
The Bible is revealed truth,
revealed by God who is infinite and personal.
He was later awarded a Th.Dip. from the Australian College of Theology.
In 1993, after serving as a Home Missionary
(student minister/lay pastor) for 13 years
he was Ordained as a minister of the
Presbyterian Church of Australia in N.S.W.
In 1996 he went to his elders with a report from a fellow minister who documented years - (about twenty years) of sexual harrassment and sexual abuse by a member of the congregation.
He had acted in good faith,
following the church's guidelines in
"Breaking the Silence"
and even though there was a Royal Commission in progress which had the terms of referance broadened to investigate Pedoephilia...
we may simply put it that the forces at work covering up or condoning or denying the intolerable breaches of the sanctity of the sanctuary were greater than the forces at work to deal with the matter Pastor Graham
was no longer willing to tolerate.
Moral or spiritual compromise is always to be avoided,
or repented of and renounced,
but no Pastor who is responding to the Call of God into the ministry,
no shepherd caring for the people, can with a clear conscience stand by and ignore a wolf in sheeps clothing mauling the sheep
no matter who issued the sheeps clothing to the wolf.
The shepherd must remove the wolf from the sheep he is there to care for and protect.
The result was that, after a sucesful international link with Atlanta during the 1996 Games, whilst preparing for local ministry at the 2000 Games at Homebush Bay (Sydney)
Pastor Graham had his link with his parish severed by the denominational authorities
even though the State Moderator was publicaly rebuked on a Sydney Radio Station,
and the Auburn Ministers Fraternal wrote a letter to the local paper affirming the stand taken byMr Guy.
A now senior minister of the Presbyterian Church in NSW once said to Graham:
"when a man has a call (by God) into the ministry, nothin can stop him..."
His ministry continued without missing a beat.
The young families of the parish formed the Auburn Multicultural Christian Fellowship inc.
The Minister's Fraternal insisted Graham continue his year as their President - affirming his multicultural ministry and his comittment to ministry at the 2000 Games.
There were many set backs
there was an unrelenting campaign by certain persons affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in NSW and certain persons in the Auburn Community,
It became necessary to resign from the Presbyterian Church - but only to affirm his position that it is intolerable to permit a wolf to be in the fold wearing sheeps clothing.
He t continued his ministry - almost uninterrupted.
however ,
there was also enormous support from other persons affiliated with the Presbyterian Church,
and in theAuburn Community.
He had been ordained,
and hold that he is ordained,
leaving only the link with a particular denomination, his ministry continued
and he carried his calling and gifts of ministry and annointing with Him
If there was a main lesson learnt, it was that the Lord is greater than the forces of intimidation and marginalisation and fear.
The Bible says:
"submit to God,
resist the devil,
and he will flee"
"All things are possible with Jesus"
Many seek a ministry with the rich, famous and powerful.
The Lord is often with the poor, the weak, the powerless and the marginalised.
When Pastor Graham stood at the base of Stadium Australia on the night of Friday 15th September, as the local Pastor in Sydney Olympic Park, as he had promised to do,
he prayed for Japanese couples, whoes wedding he had blessed - watching on TV
he prayed for certain places where the church is persecuted,
and the word of the Lord was:
Psalm 19
'The heavens declare the glory of God"
for it did not rain - only one night
it ws not windy- only one day
yet it was Spring
normally with westerly winds, and some rain.
Isaiah 61
speaking of the Lord's ministry for
the poor,
the broken hearted.
and so his dream came true,
he made a committment to minister as the local pastor inside the Sydney Olympic Park.
"God bless hte nations"
was his prayer.
That night, he ws stoped as performers crossed Dawn Frazer Avenue,
Pastor Graham blessed them as they prepared to perform in front of 120,000 seated in Stadium Australia,
and 4.5 billion people around the world,
"Go bless the nations"
he shouted
as the p[erformers, mostly children and teenagers, passed.
When a man is faithful,
the Lord gives a seed to plant in a heart.
Many years earlier,
in a Baptise Church in the edge of the city
a preacher preached on ETERNITY
he was captivated by the word by the Spirit
suddenly he proclaimed,
I wish I could write ETERNITY in the streets of Sydney...
in the congregation was an illerate converted alcoholic. Arthur Stace went out into the night without saying a word,
took out a piece of chalk and began to write ETERNITY on the footpaths of Sydney.
He wrote ETERNITY so many times that the Daily Telegraph wrote several stories about "Mr Eternity" over the years.
As Sydney entered the year 2000
ETERNITY was lit up on the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge before world wide coverage of the cities of the world entering 2000.
Now on the opening night of the Games
Pastor had been given one insiht into the ceromony - the ETERNITY sign was to be desplayed. He stayed and blessed "the eternity team" before taking his children to the hospitality pavillion beside theOolympic Boulevard to watch the eternity team enter Stadium Australia.
May these pages encourage all in ministry
to persevere
because
the Lord is in control
He will bring His purposed into fulfillment
no matter what set backs there are.
What was Pastor's greatest moment from 1993 to 2001?
perhaps it was praying alone beside the still waters of Homebush Bay at midnight during the Games, praying for security,
resisting the rain,
perhaps it was praying outside Stadium Australia on the opening night.
It was the praise in July 2001,
when 20.000 Christians filled the Sydey Superdome at Hillsong 2001. That brough tears to his eyes as he recalled praying through the night, alone after 1.00am at the Archery Centre and an appartment in Newington. It was all worth it, to melt into the crowd and join in the praises of Jesus. It didn't matter what it took, for it all melted into insignificance before the glory of God.
"God bless you"
"Go,
and serve hte Lord with gladness"
may He give you a faith which endures,
His love which casts out fear.
the capacity to allowt the Holy Spirit to bring convictio of sin
and the grace to admit it and leave the sin
where possible to restore to others
and to ask their forgiveness
So be it.
