Our purpose is to know and love God and to bring others to know and love Him.

How can I know what is real?

Postmodernism

Our society has decided that there is no such thing as truth. That is, there are many 'truths', but there is no ultimate, objective truth. All 'truth' is subjective - a personal experience or belief. Hence, I have no right to say that my beliefs are any more true than another person's beliefs. It is no longer politically correct to disagree with someone's beliefs, nor is it acceptable to claim that one 'truth' is superior to another 'truth'.

What has happenned is that in the last century, people gave up on the idea that we can have objective, certain knowledge about reality. They decided that to try and understand the real, objective truths behind reality was a lost cause. It couldn't be done. After all, many people try to explain reality, and they all come up with different and contradictory explanations. So, people decided to take a monumental step. They changed the definition of truth.

Classic truth

In past centuries, people believed in absolute truth. Truth corresponds to reality. Reality is self-consistent. Reality doesn't contradict itself. If A is true then Not-A must be false. If B contradicts C, then either B or C can be true (and the other false), or they could both be false. But, they can't both be true. This is the basic assumption upon which all of classic logic is built.

Therefore, in the past when people disagreed about something, they could argue logically about their differences, because they shared the common assumption that they were both talking about objective reality, and that only one of them could be correct. They could engage in meaningful discussion about reality, and they could respect each other's right to their own opinion even as they voiced their disagreements.

Contrast that with today. People hold that everyone's beliefs are 'true', despite the fact that they are plainly contradictory. In doing so, they have abandoned the most fundamental principles of logic. Truth no longer means 'absolute reality', it just means 'someone's belief'. Furthermore, if you try and discuss truth as absolute, you get shot down for being arrogant and for discriminating against other people's beliefs. Is it still possible to find genuine truth in today's world?

Jesus

The answer has been the same as it has been for 2000 years. God has made a way for us to know objective truth. After all, he was the one who originaly planted the desire for truth in the human soul. God sent his Son Jesus to enter our world as a human like us, so that we could know the ultimate, objective truth about the universe we live in. So that we could know the meaning and purpose of life. That truth is freely available in the most printed book in the history of the world, surpassing even Harry Potter - the Bible! And guess what - it turns out that reality is all about Jesus!

Jesus said "if you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32) The exciting news is that God offers an open invitation to you to know Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour today, and be included in his plan for the world. As you start living for Jesus and reading the Bible, you will be amazed at how God teaches and refines your mind and heart, and transforms your view of the world. Christians accept that by ourselves, we have no way of knowing ultimate truth - instead, we rely on God to reveal that truth to us. We know through our encounter with the real and living God that we are experiencing something real, and something worth living for.

If this page has gotten you thinking about truth, but you aren't sure yet about Jesus, that's fine - Christianity is only worth believing in if it is indeed true. As the apostle Paul said, "If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain." (1 Cor 15:14) Investigate, read, examine, weight the evidence, and decide for yourself whether Jesus is who he said he was. Because if he is, then he is the doorway to truth and eternal life.
