Our purpose is to know and love God and to bring others to know and love Him.

Prayer and Hearing From God

How do you hear God?

You can hear another person, but you can’t see God, so how can you hear Him?

There are several ways:

  1. Conscience. He speaks through your conscience.
  2. Feeling or discerning.
  3. A thought. Not your own thought, but one put there by God. Over time you get to recognise when it is God’s doing. Not a thinking thought, but a communication thought. Not an audible voice, but as clear as if it was.
  4. Peace. You know when you make a godly action because God puts peace inside you.
  5. Counsel of others. God gives confirmation by means of advice from others.
  6. Hindsight. You recognise afterwards that God directed you, and this strengthens you.
  7. Bible. Much is already told to us in the Bible. Sometimes God uses Scripture to speak to current events or circumstances.
  8. Pictures.
  9. Prophecy.
  10. Words.

Note - Be aware that counterfeit spirits may try to mislead you by "speaking" to you. The Bible instructs us to test the spirits (1John 4) to see it they are counterfeit. Do this by asking them doctrine questions, such as 'does the blood of Jesus pay for my sin?'

Who should I pray to?

How can you pray to the Father or the Son or the Holy Spirit, when there is only one God?

There are two parts to this answer. First, there is the mystery that there are three "persons" yet one God - likened to a cube with edges, faces and corners, separate yet one. So we are still praying to the one God.

Second, while mostly we would pray to the Father, it is very proper at times to pray to the Son (eg. thankyou Jesus for dying in my place) or to the Holy Spirit (a request for help or guidance, or for any of the gifts or fruit of the Spirit).

How do I pray?

Praying is simply talking to God. Any words are fine. You don’t need someone else’s prayer. You just need a heart that cries out to God desiring this relationship.

How do I listen to God?

Use a notebook, to write down ideas and thoughts that you get while reading the Bible each day. Expect God to speak to you as you read. Review the things you have written and test them to see if they comply with Scripture. Keep reviewing what you wrote, to keep track of the things that come to pass.
