man in wheelchair with computer Do you know someone who would benefit from a computer, to communicate with the outside world, to explore the disability scene on the net, to learn what is happening in other areas of disability or to receive emails from friends and colleagues as well as newsletters?

Then pass this information on to them and assist them to make contact on http://www.greenpc.com.au

"Green PC is about refurbishing and recycling some of the 200,000 PC's that are no longer useful to government and the private sector each year and providing them to individuals and communities that otherwise will be left behind in the information age. To do this we work in partnership with organisations so the solution is inexpensive and simple. It is environmentally responsible, it has the potential to create hundreds of jobs and skill those who would otherwise be left unemployed, and it bridges the divide that exists between the information rich and information poor.

Green PC is part of Infoxchange Australia's strategy to bridge the digital divide. This strategy has a number of community building elements including, empowerment through access to the new technologies, providing sustainable employment and educational opportunities for the long-term unemployed while also addressing environmental issues through recycling of discarded computer hardware.

GreenPCs are NOT available to the open market.
Our strategy moves beyond the traditional solution of establishing common facilities through which low income and disadvantaged people and communities share computers, and has a vision of making a computer available in every person's house, irrespective of income status. Only through such a plan can we develop a more equitable and just society as we move into a world that is progressively more dependant on technology, communication and access to information.

To date we have employed over 70 people, the majority of whom have been long-term unemployed, and established a large workshop facility with a huge storage area.

Collaboration of this type between the Government, Corporate and Community sectors will ensure that our democratic rights and civil responsibilities are met in the information age."

In order for our vision to be fulfilled we depend on the generosity of organizations that are willing to donate their redundant hardware to us. We accept donations of equipment from any organisation or individual who are willing to support us.

A concern that organisations often have is whether or not any data that was present on their machines is securely deleted, particularly where it has involved sensitive client information specific to their organisation. We have in place an extensive system of refurbishing Hard Drives that successfully removes all data that may have been present prior to donation.
